ENDGAME: LIVING ULTIMATELY
IN THE PENULTIMATE
Denise Sprimont, our Camp Director, chose the theme. Here's what she wrote about it:
"Like any other cool camp, we have a theme! Our theme is centered on what is true, beautiful and good: Jesus (with a nod to the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Our theme is (drumroll please!): “Endgame: Living Ultimately in the Penultimate.” I have been profoundly impacted by the ideas of Deitrich Bonhoeffer (which is the origin of our theme). In his book Ethics, Bonhoeffer explains that we are charged with living for the Ultimate while we live in the Penultimate. He wrote, “In Christ we are offered the possibility of partaking in the reality of God and in the reality of the world, but not in the one without the other. The reality of God discloses itself only by setting me entirely in the reality of the world, and when I encounter the reality of the world it is always already sustained, accepted and reconciled in the reality of God. This is the inner meaning of the revelation of God in the man Jesus Christ."
Our camp Bible Verse, 2 Corinthians 4:17-18, explains this succinctly: “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” During camp, we will dive into God’s word and challenge students to live for what is Ultimate while living in the Penultimate.
We’re calling this “Living for the ‘Endgame.’” Conveniently, Endgame is also the name of a Marvel movie. We are excited about all the Marvel-related details that will be woven, Mars Hill style, throughout the camp."
